Lapland - Quest for the Northern Lights On this short break you will experience some exhilarating activities that take you into the beautiful surroundings of Northern Lapland, on the edge of Europe's last unspoiled wilderness. And the highlight of your break will be the two occasions when you set off beneath an Arctic night sky in the hope of encountering the fabled aurora borealis, or Northern Lights. We cannot guarantee that you'll see this spectacular and mysterious natural phenomenon, of course, but you'll certainly have every chance of an unforgettable encounter. As well as the Gatwick departure detailed below, departures are also available from Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands and Manchester.
3 NIGHT ITINERARY
Day 1:
You fly around 0940 on a Saturday from Gatwick to Tromso in Norway, arriving approx 1420, followed by a scenic four-hour transfer to our hotel, the Davvi Arctic Lodge in Karesuando in Northern Finland, an area of fantastic scenery and on the edge of Europe's last great wilderness. After checking in, it is time to be provided with your included all-in-one thermal suits and boots. Temperatures here can fall as low as -35C at this time of the year and your thermal suit and boots are an essential part of your short break package. Please note that hats, scarves and gloves are also necessary but are not included. Remember to pack some for everyone. Once kitted out, and after a short welcome brief, you have the rest of the evening to enjoy dinner and then perhaps relax in the Sami Lounge.
Day 2:
After breakfast, you set off on a Reindeer Camp Experience (duration 3 hours) during which you will learn about reindeer hearding and how to lasso a reindeer, followed by a reindeer sleigh safari through the silent Arctic scenery. After lunch at the Davvi Arctic Lodge, you set out again into the glorious snowscapes, this time learning new skills on a Snowshoe Expedition, lasting around two hours.
After dinner, you set out into the Arctic night in the hope of witnessing the fabled aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, either on a Snowmobile Northern Lights Safari (2 sharing) or a Husky Sled Northern Lights Safari, both lasting approx two hours, before returning to the hotel for relaxation and a good night's sleep.
Day 3:
After breakfast, you have a day of leisure at the hotel. You might like to join one of our exciting optional activities, such as an Ice Fishing Snowmobile Safari, when you set off to a frozen lake by snowmobile, where you will make a hole in the ice and hope to catch your supper. Alternatively, you could join our Cross Country Ski School and Guided Ski Tour. The landscapes around the Davvi are crisscrossed with ski trails and you will have ample instruction on the art of cross country skiing before setting out on a short cross country ski trip, accompanied by your guide.
After dinner at the Davvi Arctic Lodge, it is time for the second of your Northern Lights safaris beneath the Arctic night skies, whichever one you did not join the previous evening.
Day 4:
After breakfast, you depart on your return transfer to Tromso, stopping for some souvenir shopping en route. Packed lunch included. Your flight home at around 1705 will return you to Gatwick at around 1945 UK time.
