Drive a team of huskies through true Lapland landscapes and stay overnight in a wilderness cabin. Designed for people who really want to try an outdoor adventure in Europe's last unspoiled wilderness. Travelling by husky is a tradition that stretches back for 4000 years and is one of the most memorable of arctic experiences.
Travel period Jan - March
3 NIGHT ITINERARY
Day 1:
You fly around 0940 on a Saturday from Gatwick to Tromso in Norway, arriving approx 1420, followed by a scenic four-hour transfer to our hotel, the Davvi Arctic Lodge in Karesuando in Northern Finland, an area of fantastic scenery and on the edge of Europe's last great wilderness. After checking in, it is time to be provided with your included all-in-one thermal suits and boots. Temperatures here can fall as low as -35C at this time of the year and your thermal suit and boots are an essential part of your short break package. Please note that hats, scarves and gloves are also necessary but are not included. Remember to pack some for everyone. Once kitted out, and after a short welcome brief, you have the rest of the evening to enjoy dinner and then perhaps relax in the Sami Lounge.
Day 2:
After breakfast, you will meet the dogs and receive instruction on their care and how to handle the sled before departing on your expedition. Only the swish of the sled's runners breaking through the snow will disturb the perfect silence of the wilderness and you will very quickly realise how very far behind you have left the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You will spend the majority of the day with the dogs, including several hours travelling. Lunch is taken by an open fire en route to a wilderness cabin where you will spend the night surrounded by nature. Once there, your first priority is to care for your hard-working dogs. You will want to unharness them and settle them down, providing them with a will-deserved meal. Please note that wilderness cabins are, by their very nature, basic. That is the essence of the experience. There is no electricity or running water. Facilities are basic, with bunk beds and an outside toilet. Light is provided by candles. You must be prepared to share the cabin with other members of your group. As a group, you all help cook supper on the cabin's wood-burning stove before turning in for the night, using the sleeping bags you have carried with you on your expedition.
Day 3:
In the morning, everybody takes care of their own dogs, again ensuring they are well fed and watered before being harnessed up again. Breakfast is prepared together and you set out on the second leg of your adventure, passing through forests, across fells and over frozen lakes. By late afternoon, we will have completed our great journey, returning to the warm and inviting welcome of Davvi Arctic Lodge and dinner.
Day 4:
After breakfast, you depart on your return transfer to Tromso, stopping for some souvenir shopping en route. Packed lunch included. Your flight home at around 1705 will return you to Gatwick at around 1945 UK time.
Seven night departures include all of the elements of the 3 night departures with 4 extra nights on a full board basis. Itineraries are adjusted accordingly; where possible activities will be spread over your stay although this cannot be guaranteed. All distances and durations are approximate and subject to change. Excursions must be booked in advance. Husky expeditions are based on 1 per person per sled.
3 and 7 night short breaks from £949 per person.
